Greetings from Dr. Dooner and Dr. Lee
Welcome to the website of Dr. Jim Dooner and Dr. Shung Lee. The site is designed to assist patients, their families and the care team as we move through the process of diagnosis, investigation, assessment of options and achieving the best resolution possible. We are hopeful that the website will serve two distinct purposes:
  1. Educate the patient and family about the condition, options for treatment and post operative expectations. Being well informed is important to a successful recovery.
  2. Facilitate communication and preparation for procedures. This includes the complex investigations as well as the procedures for treatment.

We will be able to assist you or your family member much more efficiently if this website is used early in the process. The login process is critical. We need each individual to set up their own user name and password. An email address is requested in the registration. If this is done we will be able to forward information to the patient through this email link. A notification will be sent via the email and this will allow the individual to directly access the secure server to retrieve their personal information. Sending the information over unsecured email channels is not appropriate.

It must be emphasized that there is so much information to absorb that it is difficult to cover it all in one visit and be certain that it is all understood. This approach is far more comprehensive and helpful.

We do not use the email route to attempt to make any form of clinical decision or assess a patient's problem. This will still require a formal consultation or follow up visit.

Relaying of the important information to the patient regarding the complex process of pre hospital preparation is increasingly important. When combined with the educational material on our website we find this approach to be very valuable. It has been rated very highly by the patients and families using this approach since 2003.

A word about cancellations The Vancouver Island Health Authority determines the number of operating rooms and beds that it can staff. The allotment of OR time for each surgeon is fixed and is on average approximately a day and a half per week. The demand for surgical interventions is clearly not under our control so waiting lists have been growing. Since the amount of available time is not being increased the wait lists grow. As urgent and emergency cases develop or beds are filled preventing new admissions for elective surgery it does become necessary to cancel some operations. This is done with the greatest regret and only when it is clear that it is the only solution to a critical resource problem. Often it is regrettably at the last minute. While we recognize that this is highly stressful for the individual and their families, this is unfortunately the way our system currently operates. The critical issues are usually related to staff shortages and budgetary issues within the health authority. Occasionally it is due to a surgeon's own unavailability. We ask your patience and understanding as our office staff tries to reschedule the procedure as expediently as possible.
